When will Sonnox provide AAX plug-ins?

Sonnox is committed to supporting Avid’s AAX format, and the first two AAX plug-ins will be ready for purchase in the next few weeks. Other Sonnox products will be introduced as soon as possible in 2012.

Will Sonnox withdraw the TDM products?

No, the current TDM product line will be available for the foreseeable future. Additionally, we have announced a permanent price reduction for the TDM products of up to 30%, active from November 1st 2011.

How much will AAX plug-ins cost?

The AAX DSP product line will be priced identically to the current TDM products. (Did we mention the 30% permanent reduction in list prices?)

AAX Native plug-ins will be included in our regular Native products at no extra cost. Sonnox native plug-ins will support AAX Native, RTAS, VST and AU formats.

AAX DSP plug-ins will include all the Native formats at no extra cost. Sonnox AAX DSP plug-ins will support AAX Native, RTAS, VST and AU formats.

Are the AAX DSP products distinct from the AAX Native products?

We will be offering two product lines for AAX:

  • AAX DSP, which comes with native products including AAX Native

  • Native, which includes AAX Native

We have decided to keep the two product lines separate and offer customers the choice (while remembering that AAX Native is included in both). The work required to develop AAX DSP plug-ins is considerably more extensive than for AAX Native. This way, Native products can be priced lower than the AAX DSP versions, and Native users don't pay extra for something they won't use.

I already have TDM plug-ins, what are my upgrade options to AAX DSP?

There will be two options to upgrade/crossgrade from TDM plug-ins to AAX DSP plug-ins:

  • If you have a TDM plug-in and wish to keep it, while adding an AAX DSP plug-in, you can make a 'supplementary purchase' of the AAX DSP plug-in for a 40% discount on the list price.

  • If you have no further need of your TDM plug-in, you can exchange the licence for the equivalent AAX DSP plug-in. This 'exchange' transaction will qualify for a 75% discount on the list price of the plug-in.

I already have Native plug-ins, what are my upgrade options to AAX Native and AAX DSP?

The latest generation Native plug-in licences include AAX Native capability. When the individual plug-in installers become available in AAX Native format, you will be able to download and use them immediately.

If you have older Native plug-in licences, there is a simple process and a nominal fee from 15.00 GBP to upgrade to the latest generation Native licences.

There will be free upgrades for customers who have purchased their new plug-ins between Sept 10th 2011 and Dec 9th 2011.

It will be possible to crossgrade from latest generation Native to AAX DSP (when the relevant AAX DSP plug-in is available). The cost will be simply the difference between the two product lines.

Are there any restrictions on the upgrade options mentioned above?

For TDM owners, there are two options to obtain AAX DSP capability: 'supplementary' and 'exchange'. These options are available for all versions of TDM licences; you do not need to upgrade your existing TDM licence to G5 before cross-grading to AAX DSP.

There is no multi-pick discount for either 'supplementary' or 'exchange' purchases.

There IS multi-pick discount for multiple Native to AAX DSP cross-grades.

The new AAX DSP licence will be bound to the TDM licence in a 'supplementary' transaction. As a result of the 40% discount, the two will be regarded as an indivisible pair, and the TDM plug-in cannot be split out for re-sale separately from the AAX DSP plug-in.

I own Sonnox TDM plug-ins and I'm planning to move to Pro Tools|HD 10 Native. How can I get AAX Native Sonnox plug-ins? Do I have to lose my TDM plug-ins?

Our 64-bit Native plug-ins are offered as part of an upgraded licence bundle for TDM licence holders too.

Once upgraded, your Pro Tools TDM plug-ins will remain as they are currently, but you'll get upgraded Native licences which will provide 64-bit support for Audio Units and VST plus we'll include AAX Native licences when available. The Oxford EQ and Inflator will become available first in Spring 2012, and other plug-ins will follow on shortly afterwards.

For current latest TDM licence-holders, this upgrade will be GBP 15.00 per plug-in, and you will retain your TDM licence as well.

Only if you are intending using Pro Tools|HDX would you need to consider buying an AAX DSP licence, either in place of, or in addition to your TDM licence.

What is the copy protection used for the new releases?

All new Sonnox plug-ins (“G5”) will require second generation iLok (“iLok 2”) from Pace. This includes the AAX DSP plug-ins and Native products that include AAX Native.

I want to buy a Sonnox Elite AAX DSP bundle, but not all your plug-ins are available for AAX DSP. What should I do?

Whilst not all plug-ins are available for AAX DSP, we recommend that you buy the individual Native plug-ins now then crossgrade to AAX DSP when the plug-ins become available – You'll just pay the difference between the two versions.

Are user settings compatible between TDM and AAX?

Avid's advice is 'as long as you have the AAX or RTAS versions installed of the plug-ins used in the session, the processing will just translate over to the new DSP. If an AAX plug-in doesn't exist, the Pro Tools|HDX system will use the RTAS version'.
