High End User Profile: Rob Kelly - Strongroom Studios
Strongroom Studios, specialising in music and DVD production, has built it's reputation by being at the forefront of new recording technologies and finding innovative ways to incorporate them into a creative studio. Rob Kelly, Post Production Manager at Strong Room, tells us about his love of the Sony Oxford EQ.
“ Strongroom has 14 networked studios and 12 Pro Tools TDM systems which are used 24 hours a day by leading international artists. All Strongroom’s Pro Tools systems are equipped with the Sony Oxford EQ which has now become indispensable. We didn’t really have much choice, as the majority of our clients now demand it.” When asked about the Oxford Dynamics, Kelly comments “We’ve long been searching for a decent 5.1 bus compressor which we can use for DVD projects, so we listened to the Oxford Dynamics. In common with my feeling on first using the Oxford EQ, my immediate reaction was disappointment… Disappointed that I’d have to pay for 11 more copies, as there was absolutely no way our engineers were going to use anything else as a Pro Tools bus compressor ! It's flexible, the interface is great, the warmth function is one of the most useful things I’ve heard in a plug-in and It again pulls off the Sony trick of sounding like the best available outboard. Don’t trust me though, listen to it.”
Other engineers at Strongroom were quick to praise the EQ.
“I was introduced to the Sony EQ plug-in when mixing a Super Audio CD for Snow Patrol. It’s the only digital eq I feel comfortable using in the same way that I would use a piece of outboard such as a GML or a Neve desk eq. Having tried many EQ plug-ins, I now use the Sony as my staple EQ for Pro Tools.”
