CBC/RADIO-CANADA Audio Postproduction has selected the Sonnox Restore suites for use on the full range of its multifaceted programming.

Jean Diamant, CBC Supervising Technician – TV Technical Production, reports, “We added Sonnox Restore Suites to the CBC/Radio-Canada Montreal audio postproduction software inventory because they have an intuitive interface, a wide range of parameters and the ability to process quickly as AudioSuite plug-ins. They also complement our other restoration products.”

Since much of CBC/Radio-Canada’s programming originates in location recording environments, it is often accompanied by extraneous noise from many sources including: air and ground traffic, indigenous wildlife and weather.  It is critical that these recordings be as clear as possible both for interpreters translating the original material, and for enhanced listener comprehension. CBC/Radio-Canada also maintains an extensive library of pre-recorded and historical material, which requires repair for improved clarity.

“We have found the Oxford DeNoiser helpful with crowd noise reduction, tape hiss restoration of old recordings and in the reduction of extraneous ambient noise in situations such as interviews recorded in a plane, or near a waterfall. I like its ability to dynamically track noise ‘fingerprints,’ and the way I can adjust the bias of the noise profile on a band-to-band basis,” Diamant says.

“The DeClicker has 3 control modes: pop, click and crackle,” he continues. “It is very good at isolating elements which need correction, from those that don’t. As well as removing digital clicks, it has also been helpful in eliminating unwanted sibilance and even has helped to reduce distortion. We have used Oxford DeBuzzer to remove induced buzz (60Hz), reduce carrier wave oscillations in wireless microphones, fan, projector and studio lighting noises, as well as many other audio intrusions. It will effectively track a fundamental frequency over the full-spectrum and it allows me to control the harmonics with a variety of parameters,” Diamant concludes.
